What is Theory
A theory is an attempt at synthesizing and integrating empirical data for maximum clarification and unification. These may be based partially on personal experience, or personal philosophy. For example in the natural sciences, the popular theory of gravity could be said to be based on experience haven notice that each time an object is throw up it doesn't stay up but drop down etc.
As earlier said that theory aim at clarification and unification then theory definitely serve some function. In a few paragraph I will put before some of the function served by theory.
1. Theory helps us to predict of occurrence of phenomena. It also help to investigator to discover areas that are yet to be exploit in other words unknown and unobserved phenomena.
2. Theory also serve the function of a manual for discovering fact as it create room for critical aspects to be investigated and crucial question to be answered.
3. Theory also guide and stimulate research.
After we have discus what a theory is, and the function that theory serves I will like to talk about how we can identify a good theory.
Characteristics of a Good Theory
1. A good theory must be based on the sound postulate and hypothesis. Also it must correlate with previously validated theories and observation.
2. A good theory should provide a means for its own interpretation and verification
3. A good theory should be clearly stated in simple terms
4. A good theory must be based on empirical facts and relationship and not just on apriority
